James C. Christie and family papers, 1823-1975 (bulk 1861-1920).

Correspondence, diaries, writings, clippings, printed matter, Civil War pension files (1882-1928), and other papers documenting in rich detail several generations of the James Christie family of Dodge County, Wisconsin; Rapidan Township, Blue Earth County, Minnesota; and Stevens County, Washington. The papers document the lives of James Christie and his wives, Eliza Gilchrist, Elizabeth Reid, and Persis Noyes; their children, William Gilchrist, Thomas Davidson, Sarah Jane, Alexander Smith, and David Bertie; Sarah's husband, William Long Stevens; and their daughter Elizabeth and her husband, Robert H. Monahan; William's children, Buell V., Estella B., Frank W., and Charles Edwin; and other family members. Letters from William, Thomas, and Alexander (1861-1865) document their Civil War service in the Southeast and along the Mississippi River with the Minnesota 1st and 2nd Light Artillery regiments. Letters between Buell, his stepmother, and his siblings address his experiences as a railroad conductor and clerk and as a traveling salesman, as well as provide information on the home life of various members of the Stevens family. Estella's correspondence discusses her life in Minnesota, Washington, and California; employment as a school teacher, with a dentist, and as a nurse; and on the death of her third husband and the ongoing lawsuits over his estate.
